URL / Link Pages (URL as content type?)

Site: dogsandus.net
Goal: Create various pages with categorized links to other web sites; the list of links would be dynamically created similar to how the image gallery / indexpage modules display data based on category (using a path like './pageindex/url/200' or something similar)
Example:
pet equipment links:
(site names linking to those sites)
equipment manufacturer links:
(site names linking to those sites)
I haven't been able to figure out how to do this in drupal. In other CMS systems I've looked at, it was a module built in and the URL was an actual content type.
My questions are:
1. Am I missing some module or functionality that can already do this or something similar?
2. If not, is anyone planning or working on a module that provides this functionality or something similar? (and if so, what sort of timeframe?)
I'm a complete newb to php, mySQL, drupal, etc so creating my own module isn't an option at this time. Maybe in a couple years :). In the meantime, I need to find a solution for providing this functionality for my homepage. My alternative at this time is to create a static page where I manually create and maintain the links - bleh. I like the dynamic aspects better.
